Is WhatsApp Marketing worth it? How to decide and get started

Is WhatsApp Marketing worth it? How to decide and get started

WhatsApp Marketing can be worthwhile when the company has a clear purpose, eligible contacts, useful events or segments, capacity to respond to customers, and a way to measure results. It may not be a priority when there is insufficient traffic, orders, consent, integration, or staff to handle responses and exceptions. The best approach is to start with a well-defined use case, measure delivery, response, conversion, and rejection, and scale only when the operation is under control.

When does WhatsApp Marketing tend to be worthwhile?

The channel is worth evaluating when there is a specific problem that a message can help solve. “Increase sales” is too broad; notifying an order change, reminding about a payment identified as pending, or routing campaign replies are clearer purposes.

Readiness signals include:

  • Specific purpose: the company knows why it will send the message and what action it expects from the recipient.
  • Eligible base or real event: the contact has context, a known origin, and a relationship with the flow.
  • Response capacity: questions, complaints, and exceptions reach responsible people.
  • Reliable integration: order, payment, cart, and customer are updated without relying only on manual spreadsheets.
  • Defined interruptions: purchase, payment, reply, error, or opt-out end the corresponding automation.
  • Measurable: deliveries and outcomes are associated with the flow, along with rejections and failures.

To understand the components before deciding, see how WPP Marketing works. Technical feasibility does not mean all use cases should be activated at once.

When is it not a priority yet?

WhatsApp Marketing can wait when the company still receives little traffic or few orders and there is no event with enough volume to evaluate. It also should not start with a purchased, outdated, or permission-incompatible list.

Other signs to postpone are lack of staff, frequent product, delivery, or support issues, the intent to send generic blasts, and absence of a person responsible for the flow. Automating messages for a journey that is already broken can amplify complaints instead of fixing the root cause.

In those scenarios there are three paths: organize data and permissions, fix the experience that causes the problem, or run a small, controlled pilot. “Not yet” is not a definitive rejection; it indicates another requirement must come first.

Readiness checklist to implement WhatsApp Marketing

Before contracting a platform or activating messages, confirm:

  1. Objective: is there a clearly defined action or problem?
  2. Eligible audience: who can receive it and which contacts need to be excluded?
  3. Permission and opt-out: is the source of authorization and opt-out requests recorded?
  4. Data: are phone, customer, order, product, and status correct and up to date?
  5. Integration: do events arrive in a verifiable way and can they be rechecked before sending?
  6. Messages: do content, category, dynamic fields, and next step match the purpose?
  7. Team: are there owners, schedules, queues, and rules for exceptions?
  8. Interruptions: which events stop the campaign or automation?
  9. Metrics: can delivery, response, expected action, rejection, failure, and cost be measured?
  10. Owner: who approves, monitors, and corrects the flow after deployment?

If several items are still unanswered, reduce the scope. A pilot with a well-defined event is more assessable than a broad deployment based only on a resource list.

Which cases should come first?

There is no universal sequence. The first flow should combine sufficient volume, a clear event, usefulness for the customer, and measurability.

  • Order notifications: inform relevant status changes when the data is reliable.
  • Pending payment: requires distinction between order created, due date, payment confirmed and cancellation.
  • Abandoned cart: depends on valid identification, abandonment rule, secure link and removal of purchases. See the abandoned cart recovery.
  • Support and inbox: can be prioritized when replies already get lost among agents or devices.
  • After-sales and repurchase: requires history, a consistent cycle and resolution of open issues.
  • Segmented campaigns: make sense when there is an eligible audience, a defined purpose and capacity to handle responses. Learn the criteria for WhatsApp Marketing campaigns.

One operation may start with notifications because the event is unequivocal; another may prioritize support because that is the main bottleneck. Clarity about the case matters more than following a generic order.

Costs that factor into the decision

The total cost includes more than a tool subscription:

  • platform used to create and monitor flows;
  • type of number connection;
  • applicable Meta charges on the Business Platform;
  • implementation and setup;
  • integrations and technical maintenance;
  • creation, review and translation of messages;
  • team for support and exceptions;
  • monitoring, reporting and ongoing fixes.

Meta's current documentation states billing per delivered message on the Business Platform, with rates that vary by market and category. Modality, rules and conditions may change. The WPP Marketing plans page shows the product prices; platform and Meta charges should be distinguished during analysis.

When evaluating the connection, consider eligibility, app behavior, required history and support. The Official WhatsApp API with CoEx may allow app and platform on the same number in eligible scenarios, but availability and behavior must be confirmed for the account.

Risks of a poor implementation

The main risks arise when automation acts on incomplete data or rules:

  • excessive frequency between campaigns, notifications and flows;
  • message incompatible with the customer's moment;
  • price, product, delivery or status outdated;
  • two flows triggered for the same event;
  • absence of opt-out or delay in processing it;
  • continuation of automation after purchase, payment or cancellation;
  • responses received with no support available;
  • attribution of any subsequent purchase to the last message sent.

The WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy requires a quality experience, respect for stop requests and use of applicable templates on the Business Platform. The company remains responsible for contacts, content, data, frequency and applicable law. This guide does not replace legal advice.

Initial plan in four steps

1. Diagnosis and choice of initial case

Deliverable: simple map of the journey, event volume, current problem and eligible audience. Advancement criterion: a delimited case with expected action, exclusions and a defined owner.

2. Data, rules, messages and owners

Deliverable: specification of events, fields, messages, permissions, stops and routing. Advancement criterion: tests confirm that correct statuses and data enter and stop the flow.

3. Controlled pilot

Deliverable: execution with a limited part of the base or volume, supervised by responsible people. Advancement criterion: deliveries, responses, failures and rejections can be explained and corrected.

4. Evaluation and expansion or correction

Deliverable: pilot report, issues found and documented decision. Advancement criterion: expand only if the operation demonstrates control; otherwise, fix, keep the scope or stop.

The plan has no universal deadline. Integration complexity, team availability, data quality and template approval can change the duration.

How to measure whether it was worth it

Track a set of indicators, not only deliveries:

  • messages sent, delivered and failed;
  • responses and reasons for contact;
  • clicks when a trackable link exists;
  • conversions attributed within documented rule and window;
  • associated revenue and subsequent cancellations;
  • volume, response time and resolution in support;
  • opt-outs, blocks and complaints;
  • data errors, duplicates and incorrect interruptions;
  • performance by flow, segment and cohort.

A purchase after the message shows association, not proof of isolated causality. The customer could have purchased without the contact or been influenced by other channels. When feasible, compare similar groups and keep the attribution model and its limitations explicit.

Decision table by scenario

Scenario Priority First step What to avoid
Store without base or sufficient events Not yet Organize data capture, purpose and journey Buying lists or deploying multiple flows without volume
Store with disorganized support Fix the operation first Define owners, queues, schedules and routing Generate more responses without support capacity
Store with identified carts and integration Pilot possible Define abandonment, opt-outs, link and measurement Prescribe fixed timing or keep messages after purchase
Mature operation with reliable events Gradual implementation Prioritize cases by utility, volume and measurability Activate all flows simultaneously
Company with purchased list Do not start with that base Build your own audience with appropriate purpose and permission Generic sends or attempts to circumvent policies
Company without a response team Smaller scope or postponement Define support, contingency and schedules Encourage conversations that will go unanswered

How WPP Marketing can help

WPP Marketing can connect e-commerce events to automations and segmented campaigns, aggregate responses in an inbox, integrate systems and present reports according to contracted and configured features. These components support execution but do not replace objective definition, data quality, support and continuous review.

Suitability depends on the e-commerce platform, connection mode, available events and the company’s process. Confirm scope, deployment, limits and responsibilities before contracting.

Frequently asked questions about implementing WhatsApp Marketing

Is it worth it for small businesses?

It can be when there is a clear use case, eligible contacts and response capacity. A small business can start with a pilot; size alone does not determine readiness.

Do I need a lot of contacts?

There is no universal quantity. It is more important to have context, purpose, correct data and enough volume to evaluate the flow without relying on incidental conclusions.

Which automation to create first?

Choose the use case with the clearest event, recognizable utility, observable volume and measurable outcome. The answer varies according to the operation’s bottleneck.

How much does implementation cost?

It depends on platform, connection, messages, integration, deployment, support and maintenance. Separate Meta charges from vendor and team costs.

Does it replace email and human support?

Not necessarily. Email may fulfill other functions, and people are still needed for replies, complaints and exceptions that require judgment.

How to know if it generated sales?

Link message and order by a documented rule, deduplicate conversions and compare cohorts when possible. A later purchase does not demonstrate causality on its own.

Decide based on control of the operation, not on the promise

WhatsApp Marketing is worthwhile when there is a clear goal, an eligible audience, integrations, support, handling of interruptions, and measurement. If any of these elements are missing, organize your database or start with a smaller pilot. Has your operation passed the checklist?
